Fires destroy over 25,000 hectares in Cape Winelands

CAPE TOWN - Fires in the Cape Winelands have been blazing for eight days now.

Over 25,000 hectares of vegetation have already been destroyed.

The fires have also destroyed four properties, but luckily there have been no injuries.

Eleven ground crews totalling 115 firefighters are battling the blazes.

Cape Winelands District Municipality Mayor Elna von Schlicht said the line on the Elandsberg is contained.

"The concerns are mainly two huge fire sites, and that is Bainskloof which has jumped over the road and also the Faerie Glen right behind the town of Worcester," she said.

"Both of these fires are not contained yet."
