DRC conflict | UN to probe DRC violence and regional risk

JOHANNESBURG - The UN Human Rights Council has approved an investigation into alleged violations and abuses in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, where deadly clashes have escalated.

The DR Congo requested the urgent meeting.

It's calling for international action against the Rwanda-backed M23 armed group, which has seized territory in North and South Kivu provinces.

The region, rich in minerals like gold and coltan, has faced decades of conflict, displacing over 500,000 people this year alone.

UN human rights chief Volker Turk warned the violence could spread beyond the DRC, threatening regional stability.

The resolution demands M23 withdraw from occupied areas and Rwandan forces leave Congolese territory.
