Diepkloof Hostel residents demand action

JOHANNESBURG - The Diepkloof Hostel was built in the 1970s by the apartheid government for migrant mine workers.

But over the years, it’s fallen into disrepair without a clear plan to upgrade its infrastructure.

Community members have protested by stoning vehicles to grab the attention of Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi.

A community leader who was born and raised here says Lesufi promised to help the community by providing proper housing but that hasn't happened.

Police say a case of public violence has been opened following the protest action.

The deployment of officers in the area will depend on how long sporadic protests last.

The premier’s office says it's the municipality’s duty to address demands but residents have threatened to continue protests until their issues are attended to
