JOHANNESBURG - The DA remains mired in controversy after the flaring up of allegations of racism and homophobia against its members of Parliament.

Shortly after the party suspended Renaldo Gouws over racist comments, another MP, Ian Cameron, faces criticism after a video from 2012 emerged showing him in blackface.

The DA has not indicated if it will take action against Cameron, but the ANC is calling on them to take action on the Cameron issue and not wait for a complaint.

ANC Western Cape spokesperson Khalid Sayed said, "Firstly we want to welcome the fact that action has been taken against Renaldo Gouws, but also how was it that he ended up on their party list in the first place?"

"The DA is still at a point that they are insensitive towards the feelings and aspirations of majority of South Africans when it comes to racism and apartheid legacy. To the issue of [Ian] Cameron who has worked a lot in the Western Cape, he has shifted the focus towards SAPS and their mistakes, away from dealing with structural inequalities that lead to criminality."

"Cameron's actions, now or many years ago, illustrate someone who is insensitive towards racism, someone who is racist, also the fact that he painted his face black to oppose transformation policies means we're to have a public representative at the legislature who is going to oppose and push back on the transformation agenda that the country has been moving on."
