Crime in SA | Trial of Modack, 14 others set to start

JOHANNESBURG - The trial of alleged Cape Town underworld boss Nafiz Modack and 14 others,
is expected to get underway in the Western Cape High Court on Monday.

They're all accused of being involved in some way, in the assassination of top cop Charl Kinnear, in  September 2020.

Kinnear was probing Cape Town's gang-related crimes and alleged corruption at the central firearms registry.

"I can assure you that the state is ready in fact the state has been ready for some time now," says NPA's Erick Ntabazalila.

But he says with multiple accused facing multiple charges, there are bound to be challenges,
including securing legal representation.

"We went as far as assisting them  by offering them legal aid although some are refusing legal aid or dictating to legal aid which lawyers they want which is against the ACT," he says.

But he's hoping they will all be represented come Monday.
