JOHANNESBURG - The City of Joburg says it has repurposed money from other department’s to fund its tactical response unit.

The TRU was launched as the crime-combating arm of the JMPD.

About 380 officials with previous policing experience were trained for the unit.

It’s part of the metro’s battle to fight crime in the city.

But as Joburg and other municipalities battle a cash crunch, Public Safety MMC Mgcini Tshwaku says they’ve had to think outside the box to fund this latest crime-fighting measure.

The unit will focus on illegal mining, cash-in-transit heists, business robberies, hijackings, kidnappings and the presence of drugs in communities.
