Almost 90% of Alex homes connected illegally

JOHANNESBURG - City Power has been cutting illegal connections in informal settlements around Johannesburg.

But, some dwellers say they have no choice but to connect illegally.

Kanana informal dwellers near Rabie Ridge are calling for a dialogue on electricity.

They say efforts to be legally connected have failed.

City Power swooped in on Alexandra yesterday, saying only 11 percent of households are legally connected.

It says this is placing a major strain on the grid and is a risk to people's lives.

The utility also says some areas can not be connected due to their location.
