JOHANNESBURG - Additional police have been deployed to the Eastern Cape to fight those behind a spate of gang violence and extortion.
This comes days after Police Minister Senzo Mchunu and his deputy, Cassel Mathale, visited the province, following complaints from residents about rampant crime.
Business owners are said to be living in fear following a surge in demands for protection fees.
Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola says the additional officers will help to fight the scourge.
Masemola has urged community members to bring forward the names of extortionists.
