2024 Elections | Eskom, IEC sign MoU to limit blackouts during polls

JOHANNESBURG - Eskom is teaming up with the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) to ensure a glitch-free Election Day on the 29th of May.

The power utility has signed a memorandum of understanding to tackle potential blackouts with contingency plans in place for any unforeseen disruptions like vandalism or theft.

Al'louise Van Deventer, Eskom's Senior Manager for Distribution System Operations, is confident their collaboration will help keep the lights on.

"The memorandum is focused on an aspect where it refers specifically on the voting stations, so what the under taking is eskom will ensure that it reduces the risk and minimise the risk of interruption of supply from a plan perspective when we can possibly prevent it," she said.

"When we have unplanned events like theft and vandalism or any unplanned intervention there are contingency plans to deal with this, however, we do not have a guarantee that theft and vandalism will not affect the power system but we do have plans to ensure that we have a smooth process from a voting perspective.”
