JOHANNESBURG - The Transport Department reported that 1,427 people died in road accidents over the 2023/24 festive period.
This is a 1.7 percent drop from the 2022/23 holiday period.
Most people who died were pedestrians, and people aged 25 and 44 years.

Gauteng recorded more deaths on the road, while the Free State recorded a decline.
Transport Minister Sindisiwe Chikunga released the statistics on Wednesday.
She said human factors contributed 80.8 percent of the crashes, environmental factors 10.4 percent and vehicle factors 8.8 percent.
