Blitzboks take on Ireland in Olympics opener

PARIS - The Springbok Sevens will be in action against Ireland on Wednesday afternoon in the Sevens 2024 Paris Olympics.

Speaking to eNCA, former Blitzbok player Tobela Mdaka said the team needs to tough it up from game one.

“The experience is there, the players are there, it’s a matter of making sure that they do the basics right and implement everything they have been doing in training,” he said.

The Springbok Sevens began their World Rugby Sevens Repechage tournament in Monaco with a dominant 44-0 win against Mexico at Stade Louis II.

Despite their struggles this season, the Blitzboks are determined to turn things around by putting in the extra effort required to make it to the final round.

The team’s preparations for the tournament hinge on their crucial match against Ireland.

“If we make sure we win the first game with Ireland, it will set up the tournament very nicely for the Blitzboks,” said Mdaka.

Expressing his confidence in the team's leadership, Mdaka added, “I am confident with Philip Snyman because he’s been around long enough to know the plan for the Blitzboks and what the future holds for this team.

“I do believe he is the right person for the team. I believe it is anyone’s game, and Snyman is the right person to take this team forward.”

Looking ahead, Mdaka acknowledges the challenge but remains optimistic about their prospects.

“A gold medal might be difficult to reach, but any medal at the moment is something we can do,” he said.
