Shell seismic survey | The fight to preserve SA’s coastline

JOHANNESBURG - The fight against seismic surveys is not just about the Wild Coast, but the protection of the country's entire coastline.

That's according to the Wild Coast communities and environmental organisations who are now heading to the Supreme Court of Appeal to stop Wild Coast exploration.

This follows the Eastern Cape High Court's decision to grant Mineral Resources and Energy Minister Gwede Mantashe and companies Shell and Impact Africa leave to appeal a previous ruling on the matter.

"Our entire coastal line has been cut up and dished up to different explorers or at least people trying to get permits to explore for oil and gas," said Wilmien Wicomb of the Legal Resources Centre.

"And so they realise that if this judgment stands, then it does constrain the minister to at least make good decisions and make informed decisions as to whether to grant these kinds of permits.

"So I think that's why it is very important for them to get clarity and the same for our clients. So it is not just about the Wild Coast, it's about our entire coastline."
