Restore the power grid | Eskom's dark cloud has silver lining

JOHANNESBURG - There may just be a silver lining around Eskom's dark cloud.

The energy crisis may present opportunities for local entrepreneurs.

Brian Day from the SA IPP Association says local investors will be needed to add generation capacity.

"Whole system has to be developed. Eskom has its transmission development plan; their number is 53 gigawatts. The presidential climate commission talks about 50-60 gigawatts," he said.

"A new generation capacity is needed. That means economic expansion, you will have investment and the hope for that is to have local investment.

"There is an opportunity and a challenge to train and retrain to get the local manufacturing value chain going to develop the economy."
