New nuclear procurement process will be gazetted
JOHANNESBURG - The process that will hopefully see South Africans say goodbye to power cuts, has started.
Electricity Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa has announced, that 2,500 megawatts of nuclear power will be secured.
Energy analyst Chris Yelland says 10 years is a very long time to wait.
Instead, he says the country should have invested in technologies, that can deliver electricity more quickly and reliably.
"I am not against nuclear on ideological grounds, but right now and for the next 10 years it's not part of the solution – need to look to other solutions – 10 years is a long time in the current world."
Energy regulator NERSA has approved the process, which is now set to be gazetted.
