WATCH | Discussion | Afriforum plans legal action against BELA Bill

JOHANNESBURG - The so-called BELA education bill has been signed into law.

But the most controversial parts are suspended for now.

This was the President’s compromise relating to the bill that was passed through parliament before the elections.

The DA has been so vehemently opposed to the bill that earlier it said it might threaten the Government of National Unity.

Clause 4 and 5 that are not yet signed give greater control over admissions and language policy to the department of education.

Afriforum had been challenging the signing of the bill and said it would launch legal action should President Cyril Ramaphosa sign the BELA bill.

In contrast the South African Teachers Union had welcomed the BELA bill.

Afriforum’s Alana Baily and SADTU’s Nomusa Cembi had a discussion with the eNCA on the signing of this new bill.
