TRC Hearings Big Business avoided accountability

JOHANNESBURG - As South Africans heap praise on the case presented against Israel at the International Court of Justice, a former student activist and Black Consciousness Movement leader is reminding the nation that South Africa's own restorative justice process in incomplete.

Saths Cooper says while leaders of big business were hauled before Truth and Reconciliation Commission, shortfalls in the restorative justice process allowed the sector to avoid accountability for apartheid era crimes.  

He said, "the focus really, is on big business because they really did themselves a bad in just paying lip service to the TRC, being forced to go there, but largely, they've been let off the hook."

"And we get enraged everyday at whatever confronts but we must remember that apartheid a crime against the humanity by the United Nations, and the persons who benefited from that are arguably the wealthiest since democracy, we going to enter 30 years of democracy, it's very fragile."

"We haven't considered those sectors that have gotten away from true accountability."
