Restore the power grid | New rules on power cuts

JOHANNESBURG - The new rules governing the implementation of power cuts are expected to be finalised by the end of March.

The National Energy Regulator of South Africa published its draft third edition of the Electricity Supply, Code of Practice.

Notable in this draft is the change impacting South African households, which define blackout stages up to Stage 16.

Energy expert Mohamed Madhi said the rules are important because it takes into account of what should happen in different scenarios.

"It doesn't necessarily mean we'll get to Stage 16," he said.

"Within the realm of possibility, under certain circumstances, we could go above the current guidelines that exist."
