Organisations disappointed Clauses 4, 5 in BELA Act are deferred

JOHANNESBURG - Several organisations have welcomed the signing of the Basic Education Laws Amendment Bill into law.

President Cyril Ramaphosa went ahead on Friday, despite criticism from various quarters.

Although welcome many are unsettled by the deferral of the immediate implementation of Clauses 4 and 5, by three months.

This is to allow for further consultations.

Clause 4 of the Act gives the Basic Education Department greater control over admissions policy, while Clause 5 compels the school governing body to submit the school’s language policy, to the provincial head of department for approval.
