JOHANNESBURG - Questions are being asked about the safety around cleansing rituals and baptisms performed in rivers, lakes and oceans.

In Gauteng, an 18-year-old and a 21-year-old were swept away by raging waters during such a ritual.

Authorities are calling for greater caution but some say authorities are powerless in controlling the practice.

The Cultural, Religious and Linguistic (CRL) Rights Commission a few years ago conducted public hearings in an attempt to find come ground among different groupings.

The Commission's Chairperson, Professor David Luka Mosoma discussed this.
