JOHANNESBURG - Blackouts are making South Africans feel unsafe and vulnerable.

The University of Witwatersrand conducted a study exploring the overall psychological impact brought on by the energy crisis.

It found that people are more anxious during blackouts.

Wits University psychologist, Maria Marchetti-Mercer, said they're trying to ascertain how people are being affected.

"We want to see what they find most difficult about load-shedding, what they're doing in terms of dealing with load-shedding," she said.

"We also want to know about people's coping skills, levels of resilience and also look specifically at psychological distress associated with load-shedding."

Ensure home safety during blackouts

As blackouts occur on a daily basis, it is crucial to be prepared, stay alert and follow safety guidelines to minimise risks.

Here are some practical tips on how to ensure home safety during power cuts.

1. Invest in backup power solutions

Consider investing in backup power solutions such as generators or uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems. These systems can provide temporary power to essential appliances and ensure a certain level of comfort and safety during blackouts.

2. Use battery-powered lights

Have battery-powered lights, such as flashlights or rechargeable lanterns, readily available in case of power outages. Place them strategically around your home to provide sufficient lighting, especially in high-traffic areas.

3. Keep emergency contact numbers handy

Ensure that you have emergency contact numbers saved and easily accessible in case of any power-related incidents or emergencies. This includes local emergency services, electricians, and relevant utility providers. Having these contacts readily available can help you seek assistance promptly if needed.

4. Be cautious with candles and open flames

While candles and open flames may be tempting for lighting during blackouts, they can pose fire hazards if not used safely. If using candles, keep them away from flammable objects and never leave them unattended. Consider using battery-operated LED candles as a safer alternative.

5. Unplug electronics

During power cuts, surges can occur when the electricity supply is restored. To protect your electronic devices from damage, unplug them or use surge protectors. This can prevent potential damage to sensitive equipment and ensure their longevity.
