HIV/AIDS | Calls to expand access to PrEP treatment

JOHANNESBURG - First rolled out in 2016 as a preventative measure against HIV, awareness and education around pre-exposure prophylaxis remains relatively low.

PrEP is currently administered to at-risk HIV-negative groups including adolescent girls, young women, and pregnant and breastfeeding women, amongst others.

In government facilities, this process is being hindered by an over-burdened health system.

A group of medical scientists believes expanding who can administer the preventative measure will ease bottlenecks.

South Africa has the distinction of having the highest prevalence of people living with HIV in the world.

While the situation has improved since the days of the slow response to available treatment options, those on the ground are calling for the next steps to be taken in the country's fight against the virus.

Specially trained nurses are currently responsible for managing the administering of ARVs, creating a backlog for preventative measures against HIV.
