Discussion | US plans to end international immunization programs

STELLENBOSCH - The fallout from US funding cuts for Aid around the world continues. 

It was reported yesterday in the New York Times that US leaders plan to end funding for international immunization programs – including the Gavi Alliance.

The Gavi Alliance has received funding from richer countries to send life saving vaccines to low income countries. It received $300 million from the US last year.

At the same time it’s being reported that funding cuts in the US could potentially halt research efforts in South Africa.

The Bhekisisa Centre for Health Journalism says a leaked memo circulating among researchers instructs a US government agency to hold all research awards to entities in South Africa.

Professor Tulio de Oliveira who is the director of the Centre for Epidemic Response and Innovation or CERI at Stellenbosch University and the Kwazulu-Natal Research and Innovation Sequencing Platform or KRISP spoke to eNCA.
