PRETORIA - Deprivation, depression and discrimination are among the most severe mental health challenges experienced by external migrants in South Africa.
This was the finding of a study conducted by the Human Sciences Research Council. It included around 400 respondents and more than four-thousand interviews.
Field workers interviewed communities in Gauteng, Western Cape, Eastern Cape, Limpopo, KwaZulu-Natal, and North West.
Migrants identified in the survey primarily originated from other countries in Southern Africa, such as Mozambique, Zimbabwe, and Lesotho.
ENCA discussed the findings with the author of the report, Steven Gordon, a senior research specialist at the Human Sciences Research Council.
