Civil society calls to amend Firearms Control Act

CAPE TOWN - According to online knowledge hub SaferSpaces, all illegal guns were once legal before being diverted to the illegal pool of weapons in South Africa.  

Gun Free SA conducted a survey in 2021, which found that there are almost 3 million legal gun owners in the country.

At the same time, South Africa had about 2.35 million illegal firearms in circulation.

According to the last disclosed police statistics, over 12 700 people were killed between January and June this year.

This represents an average of 70 murders per day, with guns being the weapon of choice.

Civil society is calling on the government to amend the Firearms Control Act.
