Big Apple not big enough for influx of immigrants

NEW YORK - New York City is buckling under the pressure of an influx of asylum seekers.

For over a year, the Big Apple has seen the arrival of tens of thousands of people.

Most are from South and Central America but a large number of arrivals are now from parts of Africa.

Officials say the city is struggling to cope and activists say Africans have little access to basic services.

Some believe the tightening of European Union asylum rules has led to a rise in people making the journey from parts of Africa to the US.

Nearly 60,000 people from African countries were arrested on the US southern border in the 2023 fiscal year. That’s compared to just over 13,000 the year before.
