JOHANNESBURG - Two well-known legal eagles in SA are facing allegations of sexual harassment and abuse.
Eastern Cape Judge President, Selby Mbenenge is currently appearing before a Judicial Conduct Tribunal, where he faces allegations of sexual harassment.
Top Advocate, Jeremy Gauntlett, is being probed for sexually abusing a lecturer, when the victim was a teenager.
These incidents are just the tip of the iceberg in a country where violence against women and children has been dubbed a pandemic.
Activist Advocate Brenda Madumise-Pajibo speaking in light of these cases condemned such behavior calling it an 'abuse of power'.
"When we talk of sexual harassment that expresses itself and reinforces inequalities of power this is what we are talking about.
"It is about those who have power which gives them authority and credibility and [in turn] use it to cause harm to others," she said.
Madumise-Pajibo said a heavy task now rests on the judiciary and the country's chief justice who now has to clean the image of the country's judiciary which is at its lowest.
