STELLENBOSCH - Human Rights Day is more than a public holiday.

It's a day on which to remember the Sharpeville Massacre in 1960, when police killed 69 people who were protesting against apartheid pass laws.

The national event marking the day took place at the Derrick Ferreira Stadium in Kariega, and Deputy President Paul Mashatile delivered the keynote address.

This year’s events are held under the theme, “Deepening a Culture of Social Justice and Human Rights".

Former Public Protector Thuli Madonsela explains the significance of the day.
