JOHANNESBURG - South Africans are encouraged to exercise their democratic right to vote on 29 May.
This year, each voter will receive three ballot papers.
So how does it work?
Ballot One: National Ballot
- This ballot will consist of a list of political parties contesting for 200 seats in the National Assembly.
- This ballot will be used to vote for political parties only and will consist of 52 parties.

Ballot Two: Regional National Assembly
- This ballot includes both political parties and independent candidates vying for seats reserved for each province in the National Assembly.
- On this ballot, voters will choose either a political party or an independent candidate to represent them in the National Assembly.

Ballot Three: Provincial Legilslature
- Unique to each province, this ballot lists parties and independent candidates competing for seats in the respective provincial legislatures.
- Voters will elect either a political party or an independent candidate to represent them in their provincial legislature.
