CAPE TOWN - Finance minister Enoch Godongwana's delayed budget speech does not seem to have all the answers for South Africans.
While the proposed VAT increase remains a bone of contention, Advocacy campaign Youth Capital believes the budget does not speak to the needs of young people.
Acting Project Lead at Youth Capital Clotilde Angelucci are calling for a bold policy action which is a commitment in a medium to long term for existing public employment programmes meant to alleviate unemployment
She said this will give young people the certainty that these projects are making an impact in their community, stimulating the local economy, as well as providing young people with work experience.
“Having a budget that speaks to young people will promote sustainability for everyone in the country,” Angelucci said.
While noting the impact such employment initiatives have on up-skilling and training youth, Angelucci argues that in the last 16 years the country has not created jobs for young people the ever growing economy.
She said there needs to be an intentional leg where skills provided match opportunities created.
