STILFONTEIN - One of the volunteers who went into the Stilfontein mine shaft has painted a grim picture of the conditions underground.
Mandla Charles says they saw piles of bodies and limbs and heads that had become detached from corpses.
He says what he saw will remain in his mind forever.
Police are expected to provide psychosocial services to the volunteers.

Police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe confirmed that two volunteers assisting in the operation had confirmed that there are no longer any illegal miners underground.
But to ensure that they do due diligence, she said, police are conducting a final sweep.
