CAPE TOWN - The Western Cape has recorded a 22 percent increase in festive season road fatalities.
More than 160 people died on the roads, a massive jump from the 131 cases recorded during the same period in the previous year.
A total of 108 deaths were recorded on municipal roads, while there was a decrease of 11 percent on provincial roads where 56 deaths were recorded.
Officials say that some road users are determined to break the laws meant to protect them.
Authorities issued 90,000 fines during stop-and-check routines and 64 people were arrested for reckless driving.
Approximately 1,000 unroadworthy vehicles were taken off the roads.
