Watt a hike | April shocks for your electricity bill

JOHANNESBURG - Your wallet is about to get lighter as you will be paying more to keep the lights on.

Eskom is set to implement its 12.74 percent tariff increase on 1 April.

Households using around 1,200 kilowatt hours per month may see an increase of up to R500.

Eskom says the tariffs take the price to levels that cover the cost of producing electricity.

Independent energy expert, Mohammed Madhi, said Eskom is in a dire situation with regard to its balance sheet and income statement.

"This increase, as bad as it is, only covers a portion of what Eskom needs," he said.
