CAPE TOWN - The Western Cape Education Department did not fire part-time teachers to cope with national government budget cuts.
Officials say schools were told last year to advertise full-time positions for staff whose contracts were coming to an end in 2024.
However, more than 40 teachers hired at different schools in the town of Atlantis are jobless after their contracts expired at the end of March.
Teachers' union SADTU says that there's a shortage of teachers in the province, despite over 3,000 contract staff being employed earlier this year.
