WATCH | SA man pleads to be freed from Al-Qaeda captivity

JOHANNESBURG - South African national, Gerco van Deventer, is still alive and well, according to a video released on Sunday.

He's been held captive in Mali after being captured in Libya in 2017, by a splinter group of al-Qaeda before being “sold off”.

The father of three is a paramedic who's been working as a combat medic.

Gift of the Givers has been involved in negotiating his unconditional release and says its negotiator received the video recorded on Friday.

Van Deventer is pleading for help to secure his release from captivity.
