JOHANNESBURG - It's a new week and a new year, but Stilfontein continues to be a concern, with illegal miners still trapped underground.
It has been three months since police began their operation against illegal mining in the area. More than a thousand illegal miners have resurfaced from the abandoned mine.

There are increasing calls from local communities and human rights organisations for government intervention.
The Mining Affected Communities United in Action has taken the issue to the Constitutional Court, calling on it to compel the government to send food to those still underground.
