JOHANNESBURG - Ingonyama Trust Chairperson Jerome Ngwenya has hit back at the eThekwini municipality for wanting people living on Ingonyama Trust land to pay rates.

The municipality alleges they owe the City nearly R200-million in outstanding rates but Ngwenya says the very same eThekwini municipality owes the trust a lot of money.

He said: "Currently, they are using Ingonyama infrastructure like water, sewer, and water reservoirs. Secondly, a substantial amount of money of land that was sold when the King was without any administrative assistance still sits in their coffers."

Meanwhile, the Msunduzi Municipality has disconnected services to the Ingonyama Trust Board offices in Pietermaritzburg, saying it owes R8-million for rates on its land.
