JOHANNESBURG - The families of two women who were burnt alive hope their killer rots in jail.
Murderer Mark Harvey has been handed two life terms for the murder of his girlfriend, Marishka Davids and her friend, Zakkiyah Rayman.
This sentence was handed down by the Johannesburg High Court on Wednesday.
Harvey he was slapped with a further seven years for arson and five years for housebreaking, after he doused the women in petrol and set them alight February 2024.
Rayman died seven days after the attack, while Davids died on the operating table.
The sentences will run concurrently.
Reacting to the sentence Marishka's mother Mandy Davids let out a sigh of relief.
"Finally our girls can rest... The judgment to day must be a lesson to guys out there that you can't get away with hurting woman. GBV is a disease in South Africa and we now need to stop it," she said.
While the family is relived at the sentence Mandy said the murder should have never happened.
