VRYHEID - Mop-up efforts are underway after New Year’s Day floods devastated residents in Bhekuzulu township in Vryheid, KwaZulu-Natal.
Heavy rains caused a stream in the area to overflow and cause severe floods and destruction in the community.
It’s the latest area to experience destructive heavy rains after several areas in northern KZN had a wet end to 2024.

The South African National Civic Organisation vowed to ensure the municipality uses its land to resettle communities that live on high risk flood plains.
Residents were also urged to stop disposing their rubbish in storm water channels.
