Violent storm wreaks havoc in Empangeni

DURBAN - Large parts of Northern KwaZulu-Natal, including Empangeni, were battered by severe thunderstorms on Monday.

One man died during the violent storm and several others had to be hospitalised, with many more displaced.

Strong winds damaged infrastructure, homes and businesses.

For half an hour, the community of Empangeni watched in horror as their homes were ripped apart.

But Alfred Mjadu has suffered the ultimate heartbreak.

He lost his father at a construction site, which is now the scene of an investigation.

Empangeni mayor Xolani Ngwezi has promised residents immediate relief and says his disaster management team and his entire office will be on hand to provide assistance.
