JOHANNESBURG - Two alleged armed robbers have been killed in a shootout with police in Olifantsfontein, Gauteng on Monday.
Police received a tip-off about a robbery and hijacking that the suspects were about to commit.
When intercepted, the suspects fired shots at the police team and a shootout ensued.
Two suspects were killed and a third was injured.
"Preliminary investigations revealed that the vehicle driven by the suspects was reportedly hijacked in Sandringham earlier this month and it was fitted with a false registration number," said police spokesperson, Mavela Masondo.
According to Masondo, the arrested suspects will be charged with conspiracy to commit armed robbery, possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, possession of hijacked vehicles and attempted murder, amongst other crimes.
