JOHANNESBURG - Crime expert Chad Thomas says the Thabo Bester case is an indication of the rot that is in our prisons.
Bester's re-emergence after allegedly dying in a prison cell fire last year, has raised the possibility of corruption within Correctional Services departments and facilities.
Thomas says high-level investigations must be carried out to get to the bottom of this.
He says more than anything, the country needs accountability.

"There was a recent expose of syndicates operating from behind prison walls targeting people into extortion scams and other forms of exploitation," Thomas said.
"What I’m hoping is that there’s a proper high level of criminal investigation. What I’m not hoping for, is another commission of inquiry.
"We know what the problems are, we don’t need to go through the problems. We need to find solutions," he said.
