Thabo Bester | Call for independent investigation

JOHANNESBURG - Private prisons are a failure and a waste of money.

That’s according to Sonke Gender Justice Co-Executive director, Bafana Khumalo.

Correctional Services says Facebook rapist Thabo Bester faked his death at a G4S-run facility.

But the security company maintains he died at the Mangaung correctional centre.

Sonke Gender Justice is calling for an independent investigation.

"What else is happening in that prison that we’re not aware of? If this is what Thabo Bester was doing, which other prisoner who has access to means and connections would be having this type of shenanigans inside the prison?" asked Khumalo.

"This brings the question of whether we’re paying for value for money in this contract with this private prison.

"I have made a suggestion that there should be an independent  investigation."
