Striking EMPD officers return to their posts

EKURHULENI - Disgruntled Ekurhuleni Metro Police officers are back at work after protesting earlier. They took to the streets bringing traffic on the R21 to a standstill.

The officers were protesting over salaries and overtime compensation.

The action affected traffic on the R24 Westbound, between the OR Tambo and Electron Interchanges. It also impacted all lanes on the N3 Northbound between Heidelberg and Elands. The City of Ekurhuleni has condemned the strike action.

Phakamile Mbengashe, the City of Ekurhuleni spokesperson said all the striking members of the traffic police have returned to their posts.

"It's quite an unfortunate event that happened this morning, the strike was indeed illegal, it wasn't sanctioned. It's quite unfortunate that it had to happen in such a manner," he said.
