Stern warning to Easter travellers

PRETORIA  - If you're planning on breaking the law during the Easter holiday period, you should think again.

That's the word from Transport Minister Sindisiwe Chikunga at the launch of the Easter Road Safety Campaign.

This year's campaign will focus on drinking and driving, pedestrian safety and vehicle roadworthiness.

Over 250 recently graduated traffic officers will also be observing operations until they're deployed on a full time basis.

Chikunga is urging officers to take the hardline against motorists caught breaking the law.

The Transport Department says its main priority will be a steep reduction in the number of road fatalities this Easter.

But this can only happen if new strategies are introduced this includes the deployment of more officers.
