SIU to probe Free State premier's office

BLOEMFONTEIN - The Special Investigating Unit is probing allegations of maladministration in the Free State Premier's office.

The Proclamation covers allegations of unlawful and improper conduct that took place between 1 January 2018 and 9 June 2023.

There are concerns stipends were paid to people who had not been approved or weren't entitled to them. According to the proclamation dodgy bursaries were also paid out, including travel and accommodation.

The Auditor General highlighted that the payments were not in line with the applicable manuals, policies, and procedures of the Office of the Premier.

Suspended ANC SG Magashule was the Free State premier from 2009 to 2017, when he was elected ANC secretary general at the party's elective conference at Nasrec.
