JOHANNESBURG - Urgent intervention is needed to prevent a total municipal collapse, according to the South African Municipal Workers’ Union.
A recent reply from the Presidency shows that close to 90 percent of the country's municipalities are facing distress or dysfunction.
Samwu's Dumisane Magagula says government should partner with municipal workers to save municipalities.

"We don't believe that Salga is doing enough, we know that there are quite a number of interventions," he said
"But what lacks is stakeholder engagement and as municipal workers and trade union, we remain a key stakeholder that needs to be engaged in these processes.
"The gist to of our message to government is allow municipal workers to partner with government in making sure that we save municipalities."
