SA’s water crisis | Joburg systems could take up to 14 days to recover

JOHANNESBURG - Parts of Johannesburg are still without water after a 58-hour maintenance outage.

Johannesburg Water is pleading for patience, saying full recovery will take between five and 14 days.

It says more tankers have been deployed to affected areas.

"When it comes to those areas that still have no water, we do anticipate that the five to 14 days will be the ones that we'll be working towards recovering those systems," said Johannesburg Water's Gugulethu Quma.

"Those systems are very difficult to recover because they are also dependent directly on Rand Water recovery so while we are trying to recover them, Rand Water's systems are still very low because this was a major shutdown as well.

"It's a knock-on effect from Rand Water to Johannesburg Water and we need continuously alternate water.

"Customers are greatly inconvenienced and the inconvenience is greatly regrettable," he said.

"We are doing everything, even reconfiguring the system so that we can be able to push more water towards those areas that are affected, but because of elevation and other technical dynamics, we are unable to restore water in those areas of Blairgowrie and Linden."
