PRETORIA - Statistician-General Risenga Maluleke announced that South Africa's population grew by 19.8 percent to over 62 million.
Maluleke made the announcement as he handed over the results of the 2022 Census to President Cyril Ramaphosa on Tuesday.
He was accompanied by a robot named Melo, short for Melokuhle, a top name for children born in the country in 2021.
South African Statistics Council Chairperson David Everatt says workers had to contend with challenges like the global pandemic and the unrest in July 2021 to complete the population count.
