SA’s blood reserves reach critical levels

JOHANNESBURG - The National Blood Service is begging for your blood.

That's as the country's reserves reach critical levels.

With just two days of supply left, some surgeries may have to be postponed.

"Our blood stocks have been ebbing and flowing in the past couple of months," said Khensani Maghlangu.

"We are sitting at 3.4 blood stocks and anything below 3.5 is usually a cause for concern for us.

"If there is not enough blood then we face a situation where surgeries might be postponed and people who need blood on a regular basis would have to wait longer to receive that blood and that would impact their health significantly."
