JOHANNESBURG - Sanral spokesperson Vusi Mona admits that South Africa has a pothole problem.
However, he denies that there are 25 million of them.

He was responding to claims by the former president of the South African Roads Federation, Mutshutshu Nxumalo, that the issue is of this magnitude.
"25 million is a bit of an exaggeration," Mona said.

"In South Africa, you have 168,000 paved roads. When you take that 25 million and divide it by 168, that is 349 potholes per kilometre, which is improbable."
Mona said an app was launched to get to grips with the right number.
"Critically we are working with provinces and municipalities. The data that's coming in will paint a picture."
